Love-Love Relationship with Chocolate
Many of you requested that I share my poem, Ode to Chocolate. You asked. And I answered. But first, let me explain…
Chocolate and I go way back — like soulmates in a past life who keep finding each other no matter how many times they swear it's over. Some call it a love-hate relationship, but let’s be honest: it’s a love-love relationship with occasional moments of betrayal (usually when my jeans get a little snug).
Chocolate has been my confidante, the one I could turn to when life got tough. Through heartbreaks, deadlines, existential crises, and raising five kids in a chaotic world, it was always there — melting in my hands, yes! But never abandoning me.
My knight in shining armor didn’t ride in on a white horse; it came wrapped in gold foil, or silver, or paper packaged — waiting patiently in the pantry, whispering, "You deserve this." Forget chivalry — dark chocolate has antioxidants, and that’s the kind of protection I need.
Sometimes I wonder if this deep, unshakable bond with chocolate runs deeper than just this lifetime. Maybe I was a goddess presiding over sacred chocolate ceremonies amongst the Maya Indians, pouring liquid gold into ornate cups while basking in my divine cacao-fueled wisdom. Or maybe I was a humble cacao farmer in a past life, tending to the sacred beans with a devotion that still lingers in my soul today. Perhaps this isn’t just a craving — it’s a sacred duty.
Sure, there have been moments of regret — like the time I thought I could stop at one piece. Chocolate knew better. It watched as I swore off sugar for a week, only to seduce me back. It’s not manipulation; it’s our destiny.
In the end, chocolate and I are like an old married couple. It knows all my weaknesses, and I’ve accepted all its flaws (which, let’s be honest, are none). No matter where life takes me, I know one thing for certain: I may walk away, but I’ll always come back. And chocolate? Chocolate will always be waiting. 🍫❤️
Ode to Chocolate
taste of freedom
on my tongue
my childhood memories
dancing on taste buds
as if I were once again young
feeling of escape
endorphins rushing through my brain
like raindrops tiptoeing
through thoughts and my pent up pain
chocolate is the magic drug
intoxicatingly innocent
gives me wings to fly
and makes me momentarily omnipotent
chocolate I can control
chocolate - always just one bite away from filling that bottomless hole
'chocolate en español'
reaches the depth of my fears
sweetens my tears
melts and disappears
my boundaries,
frontiers
the walls built over many, long years
chocolate feeds my insecure soul
whether licked from my fingers
or the crevices of an old cracked bowl
each and every nostalgic bite
leaves me just a little less broken
and a drop more whole
With gratitude, love, and a dash of humor,
Dr. Tamy *Skye
